The Campaign Chronicle is a regular blog series in which I publish my notes, thoughts, and plans for my tabletop role-playing games for which I am game mastering. These feature world-building notes, recaps of game sessions, and notes to keep in mind for future sessions. Enjoy!
This post will detail the events that occurred during Session Three of our game.
The Mumon Rift WARS
Session Three: 01.17.2017
Encountering the Malfunctioning Medical Bot
The players entered the labyrinthine maintenance tunnels beneath Ceres and were immediately drawn to the sound of a regular, periodic heavy clanking of metal on metal. Venturing down a few side tunnels led them to the source of the echoing noise; a damaged medical bot 'working' on the body of a dead Gongen on a nearby table. The medical bot is working with a case of medical supplies, some common, some actually worth a fair few credits.
The players began by trying to identify the bot's damage: sustained from a major fall. They then identified the body's damage: both sustained from a major fall, as well as multiple lacerations. They tried reasoning with the bot, but its damaged functions caused it to be uncooperative to logic or simple commands. While most of the PCs were discussing how to resolve the situation with this bot, Riggs moved up and cleaved the bot in twain with his boarding axe.
As they collected what they could from the bot and from the medical case, Haru examined the Gongen and determined him to be of the Deigan Kokata, the clan of spies, informants, and operatives. Before further deliberation could commence, they heard the sounds of gunfire echoing through the tunnels, and a new sense of urgency gripped the group.
Encountering the Accord Pirates
The PCs approach the sounds cautiously and catch glimpse of some Accord Mavericks standing over a pair of bodies. The Accord attack, and the combat that ensues sees the Mavericks and our PCs firing at each other down narrow corridors and chasing through decrepit industrial chambers. It finishes when the last Maverick surrenders, and another is tripped up and pinned by Slipheed.
The pinned Maverick spills his guts to the merciful Slipheed, who learns that the pirates are not really connected to their current mystery at all - just being brigands in the bowels of Ceres. Slipheed, now separated from the group, lets the Accord pirate go unarmed, watching the modded spacer skitter away down the tunnels.
The surrendered Maverick is held at sword-point by Haru, undergoing a similar interrogation with similar results. The blood-thirsty Riggs is not sated by keeping an aggressor alive, and makes to end the life of their captive before being stopped by Haru. A battle of wills ensues, with minor blows following before Riggs backs off and allows the Gongen to finish his questioning. Once Haru learns that this Maverick was surviving in the tunnels by preying on the less-fortunate, his desire to keep the captive alive dwindles, and he allows Riggs to execute the Accord pirate.
The group begins to scour the makeshift hideout the Accord had set up, and wind up locating some useful items: explosives, medical equipment, and even a broken suit of metal and powered armor. With Samson getting to work repairing the armor, we leave the PCs to pick back up in a later session.
